Gebel el-Arak Knife
Description & Significance:
The blade of the knife is made from a finely grained yellowish flint-also known as 'chert'. The handle is made from ivory of an elephant tusk. On one side of the handle there is a carved scene of a battle and on the other are mythical scenes. In Ancient Egypt, flint knives were often used for ceremonies, however evidence suggest that this knife was used as a weapon. Date: Naqada II period, 3450 BC. |
